Christian Meditation

Contact: Jacqueline Russell

Mondays 7.30pm - 8.30pm in St Clare's Church. Newcomers are asked to arrive by 7.15pm

We are an ecumenical Christian prayer group connected to the Church and the wider faith community. We follow the teaching of John Main OSB (1926-1982) as passed down via the World Community for Christian Meditation, which is where our meditation practice stems from.

The format of the meditation sessions is a reading or prayer with an introduction to the practice to instruct those coming for the first time. After the practice there is usually a longer talk which is sometimes on a CD. You do not need to know how to meditate before you come.

What is meditation?

Meditation, or contemplative prayer, is a universal spiritual discipline central to most of the world’s religions and wisdom traditions. The emphasis is on practice and experience, rather than theory and knowledge. The practice we advocate here is mantra meditation following the method re-discovered in the early Christian tradition by Dom John Main.

Why do we meditate?

We do not meditate purely to de-stress; this is merely a by-product. It is therefore not a relaxation technique to be mastered, but a contemplative discipline to be followed. By temporarily silencing our thoughts and letting go of sounds and images we enter into an interior silence, a different reality beyond the world of the senses. We come to a deep interiority, where we discover our own eternal essence. There in a peaceful silence we realise not only our true identity as a child of God, but our inter-connectedness with others, the whole of creation and the ultimate reality of our being.
